Campaign to uncover the mystery of Aloe Vera
Simplee Aloe are supporting the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew with their pioneering crowdfunding campaign with the goal of driving awareness of Aloe vera. Funds raised will allow scientists to use cutting-edge approaches to unlock the 2,000 year mystery of Aloe vera and enable assessments of the potential of hundreds of other aloes for local industries in the future.
Once rumoured to be a staple in Cleopatra’s beauty regime, today the gel from the succulent leaves of the Aloe vera plant is used in an enormous variety of foods and products for health and wellbeing, but it is how Aloe vera went from wild plant to natural product superstar that is still shrouded in mystery.
This significant step highlights Kew Gardens’ innovative approach to scientific research by allowing the public to directly connect with findings throughout the campaign and have a firm role in uncovering the mystery of Aloe vera. Simplee Aloe is thrilled to be supporting this campaign to highlight the use of Aloe vera in everyday products and to teach the public about known benefits.
If the £7,000 target of Kew’s inaugural crowdfund is secured, Kew scientists will be able to confirm the identity of the closest relatives of this mysterious plant for the first time in history, unlocking the wide reaching benefits of aloes to humankind.
“The funding for this research will go beyond solving a botanical mystery. Understanding the relationships between aloes and the unique properties of Aloe vera will allow us to share information with people who rely on these plants for their livelihoods, to unlock the potential natural capital of cultivating Aloe vera and other local species for similar purposes.”
