Rashes force a recall
On Wednesday, January 14th Fitbit voluntarily recalled its flagship wristband fitness tracker the Fitbit Force as well as halting all sales through the company’s website and third party retailers such as Amazon.
The move came following a growing number of complaints from users who had been reporting skin irritation, rashes and even burns. Looking into the complaints the company found that the problem had not been caused by the battery or electrical systems as some had suspected, but rather that some users were most likely suffering from an allergic reaction to some of the materials used in the wristband such as nickel and adhesives.
The recall was announced with a statement of apology from Fitbit’s CEO and Co-Founder, James Park:
The recall comes as an unfortunate setback for Fitbit who have been leaders in the highly competitive wearable fitness tech market. The Fitbit Force in particular had won rave reviews across the board, praised for it’s ease of set up and use, accurate multi-parameter tracking and sleek design.
