CherryActive talk recovery at Be:Fit London
The anti-inflammatory properties of cherries are well known. At Be:Fit London HealthGauge took the opportunity to speak to Simon Warren, Sales and Marketing Manager for CherryActive to learn more about how cherries fight inflammation and combat the effects of ageing.
CherryActive is a British brand of cherry based products focusing on sports recovery. The Montmorency cherries are grown in Michigan, USA, in an area where the soil is high in nutrients. The cherries are left on the trees for as long as possible to enable them to absorb the maximum amount of nutrients. This results in CherryActive’s products being massively high in antioxidants. Warren claims that a single 30ml serving of CherryActive concentrate contains the same anti-oxidant power of 23 portions of fruit and vegetables with an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of 8,260 placing it within the top third of the scale (the highest being raw sumac with a value of 312,400). One the antioxidants within Montmorency cherries is anthocyanins which produce its anti-inflamatory effect.
Research has shown that Cherry active both speeds up muscle recovery and reduces soreness. It does this by combating free radical damage. When exercising the rate of respiration increases, thereby pumping an increased amount of oxygen through the body. This increases the rate of free radical production. Free radicals are part of the bodies immune process, however a side effect of this process is that they cause damage to cells resulting in a fatigue/ageing effect. The antioxidants in CherryActive act to combat this effect, reducing damage and inflammation meaning that recovery is faster and more efficient, allowing the user can return to exercise sooner.
CherryActive is available both in a concentrate for as well as a powdered capsule which is lower in antioxidants but also significantly lower in antioxidants for those on a calories controlled diet.
