Nutritionist, Mieke Acda discusses casein
Health Ingredients Europe 2014 was hosted in the Netherlands, a country which happens to be the third largest dairy consumer per capita in the world.
At the show FrieslandCampina, one of the biggest dairy companies in the country and the world, presented concepts for healthy ageing and weight management such as a new ready-to-drink beverage. The company is also well known as a manufacturer of caseinates. Casein is one of the two proteins found in milk (the other being whey), making up around 80% of the total protein content. Once extracted a 90% casein protein can then be applied in a number of health and functional applications.
As Nutritionist Mieke Acda (Bsc,RD) explains, casein is as high quality protein rich in all essential amino acids. One of the key aspects of casein that that if delivers a slow release of protein into the blood stream which is can be exploited in a post exercise context if often consumed before bed allowing for the protein to be slowly absorbed whilst sleeping.
